Description
Mounjaro is a medication that is FDA-approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Recently, Zepbound received FDA approval for weight loss in adults with obesity (BMI≥30) or overweight (BMI≥27) with a weight-related condition. Both Mounjaro and Zepbound have the same active ingredient, tirzepatide, and are available in the same dose strengths.
It is a single molecule designed to bind to glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists.2
Mounjaro represents a different class of medicines introduced for adults with type 2 diabetes. It works differently by directly activating GIP and GLP-1 pathways to help regulate blood sugar.
Mounjaro®(mown-JAHR-OH) is an injectable medicine for adults with type 2 diabetes used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose).
- It is not known if Mounjaro can be used in people who have had inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
- Mounjaro is not for use in people with type 1 diabetes.
- It is not known if Mounjaro is safe and effective for use in children under 18 years of age.
- Mounjaro is an injectable prescription medicine that is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- It is not known if Mounjaro can be used in people who have had pancreatitis. Mounjaro is not for use in people with type 1 diabetes. It is not known if Mounjaro is safe and effective for use in children under 18 years of age.
- Mounjaro helps your body both regulate blood sugar and decrease how much food you eat
- Mounjaro is not a weight loss drug.
- It may start working to lower blood sugar from the first dose.
- The 2.5 mg starting dose is not meant for blood sugar control.
